10 things we want to change in the school

I started off with the '10 things we want to change & 10 things we want to strengthen in the school' thread today on orkut. I hope to draw some great ideas from there andgive it to the school. I am sure all of us want the school to reach great heights!

Wishlist: 10 Things we would want new/ improved
  • Sports facilities
  • Encourage English speaking at nursery/primary level
  • Discipline
  • House System to be formalised- prefects/ head boy & girl to be made a prestigious office
  • Canteen

Kudos List: 10 Things we would want strengthened
  • Library
  • Active participation of students in extra-curricular activities
  • Better equipped computer labs

Discussion on orkut- how our school is unique

There is a good discussion going on in the Orkut PDPS community as to how PDPS is unqiue. So, I though that it would be good to list down the points that have come up in the discussion.

Neeti Sinha thinks that the library was super... and I surely agree with her! Naren thinks the same too.
I think that the teachers are great - very hard working, sincere and result oriented!
Manoj appreciates that computer lab that was started way back in 1984-85.
Atul wants everyone to know that the fact we all studied there makes PDPS really unique:)
And of course the diwali celebrations:) (which unfortunately are not as 'magnanimous' as they used to be in our times!)

Bangalore Alumni Meet

This one comes from Naren... alumni meet in Bangalore- thats a fantastic idea!
Well, so, here's the lsit:

2001 Sanesh Vig
1996 Narender Mehra
Govind Kaushal

People unable to attend alumni meet

I thought that since a lot of people are taking pains to write back saying that they would not be able to attend the alumni meet, it would be only fair to mention their names here too! So, here goes:

1993 Manoj Singla (out of station-US)
1994 Me of course:) Anshu Bhardwaj (out of station-US)
1997 Deepika Bhardwaj (out of station-Shanghai)
1998 Reena Mehrotra Kapoor (out of station- Singapore)
2000 Sudeep Arya (out of station- Pune)
2001 Sanesh Vig
2001 Pankaj Gupta
2002 Rahul Jain (out of station- Indore)
2005 Mayank Anand Singh (out of station- join the Bangalore meet Mayank)

Ruchika Chug

News (about the school) you could use

PDPS had an active archery team. It even participated in the Asiad games (as support to the main competitors). Sanjay Mcgee shared with us the sportsmanship spirit of Mr. Prabhu Dayal Bhatia (yes, he-Sanjay- had the honor of meeting him! So did I, but I was too young to actually remember any of our conversations:) ). It so happened that his team-mates were using bamboo bows & arrows (I guess the kinds that are available during Ramleela;-)) to practice their shooting skills in school - which I am sure was more to enjoy themselves rather than to seriously compete in competitions. But Mr. Bhatia actually got them a set of carbon bows and arrows (the kinds used in competitions I guess) and they then had a formal team! Kudos! I knew that the man was a visionary and quick to spot talent and opportunity, but it is simply great to see a real life example!

Well, the school music & dance team has always done well. I remember that Rohit Mehra and I used to compete in a lot of debate competitions and win too:)

This storyboard would be filled with a lot of unique stories before we know it!
Cheers!

Hear Hear! We are now in touch with one of our seniormost members- Sanjay Mcgee. He is from the first batch of the science program and completed high school in 1984! Welcome Sanjay, and thanks for replying to the invitation.

Orkut nearing the magic figure

Hey Hey Hey!

Orkut is just about to reach the magical 100 mark. We already have 95 members there. Not to forget yahoo groups, another 35 members there. I sent out invitations to 10 more people from namesdatabase today, and one has already written back- Kapil Singhania.

Good going people!

Keep joining the bandwagon!

Cheers!

Date for Alumni Meet

A lot of poeple are enthusiastic about coming to the Alumni meet... so I floated 8th or 15th July (both Saturdays) for a get-together at the school.

I hope quite a few people turn up. This is going to be the first event of its kind...for the alumni, by the alumni:) Thats cool! At least people will get a chance to meet each other and we would get many more people into our fold! In addition, the school kids will get a chance to interact with the alumni! So this should be a good thing. Lets see what the school authorities have to say to this plan. Hopefully everything should work out fine!

Cheers!

Our little game

Our little game has drawn many people out of their shells! I had been thinking earlier that guys would win hands down...but I was quite wrong.... We are almost a week into the game, and although the tally has not gone below 50, it is still at 50. and this is really remarkable because a lot of girls are coming forward to contribute! Which means that many of the 85 members read the scraps/messages but dont really reply regularly.

As long as we have a vibrant community going, its fine!
Cheers!

Giving back to the school

A handful of alumni are quite enthu about going back to school for a visit. I am sure these very people would also love to step forward to offer some career counselling advice to the X & XII std. students at school. I floated the proposal of contributing to the school on the orkut group today.

The idea is to form a core team of members who will co-ordinate various activities (e.g. career counselling), and ensure we have enough volunteers to carry through this for the years to come. Considering that we have over 100 members on both groups combined, even if 4-5 people volunteer every month, we should be in a good position.

Specifically for the career counselling idea, we can begin by listing our experiences after school. How we chose the under-grad course, when did we plan for the current career we are in, how did we plan that, what all guidance is available for pursuing your area of interests, what resources are there...etc etc etc.

Other than career counselling, we can offer reading sessions to kids in the elementary grade. Spoken english of kids in our school is hardly anything to write home about. Again, some of us can volunteer (But this would be on a weekly basis) to read out stories to these kids so that they can catch the pronunciations.

Once above ideas take good shape, we can have summer camps for taking this forward.

More ideas/ suggestions etc are welcome!
Cheers!

Nice game by Manish

I thought the regular stats on the number of members going skywards (just to mention again now that I brought up the topic-orkut-81, yahoo-31), I should blog some activities that are going on on both groups.

Manish has started a numbers game on orkut... starting with 50, add 2 pts for every boy who logs in and subtract 2 for every girl. Well, no guesses for that one on who would win... there are far many boys on the blog than girls... BUT...hang on.. i'll play the slip of the spider as much as possible. I'll do my '2 bit' of pulling down. No sadistic pleasure there...just to show the might of girls! Hail girls!!

Yahoo groups is a little bit dormant. I guess unless one gives a strong nudge to people to come forward and write something, they are, well, dormant. Nonetheless, the sheer numbers are good enough, considering that we've been active only a couple of months.

So long then... until I get something more substantial to write, I would continue the regular small update blog!

And of course, all you blog readers, please do come forward to contribute... think of this blog like the school magazine-our very own Bandwagon

Cheers!

School Tour

The school tour (kids went to Manali this time) would have been great fun. I never went on a school tour, but I am sure a lot of you did. I remember one time when I went with family to Manali when the school kids also happened to be there. It was quite fun. I am sure some people from our groups would have been there as well.

It would be nice to hear from those of you who went to the school tours... how were the experiences like? What all did you do? The tours were normally called educational tours - though I know (and so did everyone else in school) that they were nowhere remotley near being educational. The only thing I remember from my Manali tour was the snow hill near Rohtang Pass and the Hidimba devi temple, which of course had nothing to do with any of what we studied except that Hidimba Devi was Bhima's wife (in Mahabharata) and that Rohtang Pass is one of the few passes that gave us access to China in remote times.

So long then!

Special mention of Rahul Khanna

We have a complaint from Rahul Khanna of the 2003 batch... that no one from his batch his listed on this blog. Well Rahul, my apologies for the same. It just so happens that nobody from your batch responded to the invites I sent out through namesdatabase or register on orkut/yahoogroup and give complete information.

So, you do us the honours of being the first one on the list. I have updated your info in the Class Notes post.

Cheers!

Alumni Meet

Kirti (Yaaran da dashan on orkut) has floated the idea of holding their very own alumni meet in Delhi. This is a great initiative. Thats the way to go people... come up with ideas to get the group running at full steam. For those of us who are in Delhi, and I am sure most of the junta is, this alumni meet would be a good idea to put faces to names and increase your network of friends. Since we are in this (the group I mean) together, we should make every effort to make the best of it!

Hope some of you guys can make it to the Delhi meet. Have a blast!

Dhoom 2!

This is awesome... 63 members on orkut and 22 on yahoo at the last count, though of course, a few of them, and i share the honor too, are members of both groups! Well well.. the databse has over 80 members now, but of course, the contact details of a few are missing. Have been sending invites through yahoogroups to all those whose mail ids we have...essentially mail ids given by current members of the group who are in touch with these people. So, may our numbers rise!!

Uploading a photo from Ankur's album: Thanks
to him, and my apologies in advance for not having asked his permission to use the
pic... but I am sure he wouldn't mind!
You can see Ankur here with his 8th standard
buddies enjoying the winter sunshine in the
school grounds.

Till next time,
Cheers!

New life!

Hey....funny as it seemed earlier when I out together the list of alumni from the orkut and yahoo groups, it has infused new life into the group! We have had a spate of mails on the yahoo group, and a couple of people have put up photographs as well. This is really awesome. I hope this continues.

Yahoo Group & Orkut Community Updates

Both yahoo group and the orkut community seem to have taken off like a rocket in the past 2-3 weeks. While we have over 50 members on orkut, the yahoo group has more than 20, and many more who are not yet members.

So, yesterday I did a foolish (but good in the long term) thing- i made a database of all people on orkut and yahoo and mailed it to everyone in the yahoo group. Unfortunately, orkut does not allow one to post attachments (as i came to know from people who use orkut regularly). This got Pawan Gulani rocking and he sent out a list of his batchmates/friends with whom he is in touch with. I'm gonna add his details to the class ntoes chapter so that we know whats happening there!

Well! This is really great! So, while i still have a couple of months at hand before starting with my MBA, I can actually work on some more ideas on the alumni database and site!

Till next time,
Cheers!

Alumni Database & School Tour

Alumni database is going pretty strong on the yahoo group - 7 people enrolled on the same day! Thats cool!

Anyways, school is quite deserted at the moment since holidays started last week. Also, the school tour has gone to Kullu Manali this year. For all those who remember, we guys have this annual trip to a hill station beginning of the holidays. So, these guys get back on 5th!

Ah! I remember the one and only tour with which I went - and co-incidentally, that one was to Manali as well;-) comfy co-incident, aint that one?

Other PDPS Groups on the web

Hi All,

Just to post the group names once again:

a) The yahoo group is : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pdpsean
You can send messages there by mailing to pdpsean@yahoogroups.com

b) The one on orkut is a community called Prabhu Dayal Public School. It has more than 50 members already.

c) You can also check out the wikipedia link at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prabhu_dayal_public_school
and contribute additional information about the school. (By the way, PDPS, pdpsean and all other variants will lead you to the above site.)

Additionally, we've started a database on yahoo groups, so, please register yourself there for sure. This is gonna be a good thing in the long run!

Cheers!
